As women-of-size, with very active career and personal interests, they became keenly aware of a gap in the market. Plus size fashions in department stores and chains tend toward outsized missy clothing, and only a fraction of the styles that are available to their "average" shoppers. Actually, recent studies report that over 50% of American women wear size 14 and above.
