Big on Style's first store was opened in 2003 by sisters Beata Chapman and Betsy Renner in Capitola, California. As women-of-size, with very active career and personal interests, they became keenly aware of a gap in the market. Plus size fashions in department stores and chains tend toward outsized missy clothing, and only a fraction of the styles that are available to their "average" shoppers. Actually, recent studies report that over 50% of American women wear size 14 and above. So why are there so few attractive, fun plus size womens' fashions?
